Spiced Smashed Sweet Potato Recipe In 7 Easy Steps

My kids used to hate sweet potato, but they love this recipe! Plus, this spiced smashed sweet potato recipe takes around ten-fifteen minutes to make, depending on the size of the vegetable, so it’s an easy weeknight solution. They are so easy that they have become a bit of a go-to for me and the kids are getting sick of them. Haha!

One night, I had planned to roast a large sweet potato and forgot to throw them in the oven!! Does that happen to you?? I knew they would cook in the microwave in a quarter of the time, so threw them in there. In a rush, I threw in whatever spices sounded good to me- and it worked! I managed to remember what I put in there and tweaked the amounts over time. I have made these again and again, with success every time. A great weekday side that is a breeze to make and tastes fancy!

I also added nutritional yeast to give it a bit of a nutty, cheesy flavour. Nutritional yeast is really good for you: it’s a complete protein, has fiber and is a source of B vitamins, among other things. You can find it at most grocery stores and health stores. My local CO-OP and Safeway both carry Bob’s Red Mill Nutritional Yeast Flakes, so it isn’t that hard to find. My husband’s mom has always put nutritional yeast on popcorn, which I hated when they first introduced me to it but it grew on me and I love it now. So when you buy it for this, you can try that, too!

Spiced Smashed Sweet Potatoes

A quick ten-fifteen minute weekday side for dinner

Course Side Dish
Cuisine American
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes
Servings 4 people

Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet potato
  • 1/2 tbsp butter or coconut oil
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 2- 2 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp nutritional yeast
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cut your sweet potato in half and place on a microwave-safe plate or dish. Poke a few holes in side and top for steam to escape

  2. Put in microwave for 8-10 minutes on high. Test softness with fork. If still hard, put in microwave for 2 minutes at a time until soft and fork pierces through easily.

  3. Once soft, leave to cool for 3-5 minutes. Once cool enough to touch, use a knife and fingers to peel the sweet potato. Put the peeled sweet potato in a large bowl.

  4. Add butter (or coconut oil) in the bowl with the sweet potato and mash together.

  5. Add nutmeg, paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, nutritional yeast, salt and pepper. Mash the ingredients in until fully mixed.

  6. Taste and add more chili powder until desired spice level is achieved. Add more salt and pepper if needed. You may also add smoked paprika if you want it to have a deeper spiciness or if you want to change the taste.

  7. Serve! Goes well with any fish, meat or other veggie side. Also makes a great lunch on its own with a bit of chopped parsley or basil on top.
