As a parent, finding the time to both prepare gluten-free dishes for your young ones, and getting....

Happy January everyone! Did you make New Year’s Resolutions? How are you doing at keeping them? I made promises to myself to make some big life changes, out of necessity to my physical health and mental sanity. This very important motivation made it easy for me to stick to my goals, so far. These last couple of weeks have been about getting back on track with my eating, so I restarted The Gut Makeover eating plan on January 2nd. In November and December I got way off track with my eating. I was a bit depressed, to be honest, and…

I have a hard-working husband, an anxious kid, a sensitive kid and a neurotic cat (she likes being slapped on the butt, (seriously!), which makes me wonder about her past life, but more on another time). I didn’t need a leaky gut on top of all of that. It’s so broken that I am constantly fatigued and in constant pain. I needed a change. So I got a book written by a nutritionist and started to learn. Once I read the entire thing, I started the program to (hopefully) heal (or at least help) my gut. And I started The…

Okay, so I have 3 key products I rely on since becoming gluten-free and thought I would share. Robin Hood Gluten-Free All Purpose Flour Blend Although you can make your own blend of gluten-free flour using several ingredients, sometimes it is nice to have a pre-made blend on hand. However, if you have the ingredients, I strongly recommend Charlotte J’s GF flour blend on Food.com, which you can find here. Her mix can be used almost anywhere regular flour is called for in the same amount. If you find yourself pressed for time, or without the individual ingredients to make…

I was having a conversation with one of my favourite health coaches ever, Naomi Teeter, and the word “balance” came up. Why are we all so obsessed with it?? Naomi has a very healthy view of what balance is and she is so down to earth about it that the conversation got me thinking, WTF is balance? So I started to write and a rambling stream of thought came out….as this…. Balance is trendy. All the self-help gurus tell us we have to focus on balanced healthy living. But WTF is Balance???? If you looked at my…

All that rich food. All those yummy drinks. All those amazing desserts. All literally gut-wrenching for some of us. Christmas doesn’t have to derail us so that we suffer gut pain and bloating afterward. Here are some things that work for me and help my gut work more efficiently, so far. In January, I think I am going to try the Wahls-Protocol diet and see if it acts as a reset for me. But in the meantime, here is what I do when I am having one of my best days without nausea, bloating, gas or pain. All of these…

The other night I was super rushed for time. I worked late and it seemed that supper time snuck up on me. We had activities to rush to after supper (#momlife, right?), so as soon as I got the kids from school it was time to start supper. If you work and do ANYTHING ELSE in life, you’ve had these nights too. We had a speaker come talk to our school council meeting and she said, ‘You’re busy. I’m busy. We are all too busy all of the time so there is no need to talk about that anymore. We make…

As you know, I have to stay gluten-free. Most of the time I just troll the internet for gluten-free recipes that may or may not work. I rarely buy cookbooks, but when I saw the cookbook “Deliciously Ella” in the discount section at Chapters, I knew I had to have it! I recognized her name from her blog, which I had happened to visit once or twice, and had liked the couple of recipes I had gotten from it. The biggest appeal for me was that the cookbook used a few core ingredients over and over. None of the buying…

The title is a message to myself. I have decided that half of my issues are over-thinking food. Panicking about whether I am eating right is tying my stomach up in knots, making it impossible to digest. Could I eat more fermented foods? Sure. Could I cut out alcohol completely, instead of the 3-5 glasses a month I consume? Sure. Or could I maybe, just maybe, do it all in moderation and breathe easier? Hells yeah. When we were in a Cuban resort for a week (I know, I know, shut up about it already! Well, I can’t. It was…

What is it about February that makes me want to eat only chocolate and bread, pasta and crackers? I crave carbs like crazy, along with sweets. I have started to log my food every day, and as soon as February hit I ate 6 snacks a day instead of 3. Why?? I didn’t even realize I was doing it until I had to sit down every night and write it all in. I think it is that storing up for the cold, dreary month ahead vibe that hibernating animals get. Thank goodness gluten free bread is expensive and not as…
