• Depressed? Internet Mood-Boosters!

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day and I spent part of the day doing some self-love rituals. A package came for me the day before (perfect timing!) of some bath products I was being gifted, so I decided to have a long hot shower and use the bar soap. (I promise to put a full review later of every product, even though she didn’t ask me to, but I did use the soap yesterday and it was divine! It was also the prettiest soap I have ever used in my entire life.) I did my workouts for the day. Afterward, I used…

  • Feeding the Soul By Creating.

There is an Aesop Rock song, called “Rings“, that starts out with the lyrics: “Used to draw, hard to admit that I used to draw, portraiture and the human form, doodle of a two headed unicorn, it was soothing, moving his arm in a fusion of man-made tools and a muse from beyond…” (Hear the whole song here.) And even though I never used to draw, I do connect deeply with these lyrics. When we do things that feed the SOUL rather than just our pocketbooks, it is deeply satisfying and almost tribal….and very therapeutic. Whether it is art, journaling,…

  • A New Book Discovery and A New Parenting Strategy.

As I sit and write this, I can hear my cat out on the open balcony, playing with leaves. He is pouncing and chasing. I can hear the patter of his feet and the rustling of the leaves as he attacks and bats at them. The fall light streams in through the window in a golden glow and the air smells of cinnamon and pine. My kids are at school and I sit hear and sip coffee, researching ideas and writing to you. If you are an aunt, a sister or brother, a lover of art, a fan of quirky…

  • Beakerhead 2016

In Calgary, there is a yearly event called “Beakerhead” which they proclaim is “A Smash Up of Art, Science, & Engineering”. I was only able to go for a few hours during the day and, even without the lights on the impressive displays lit up, it was really cool. I went while my kids were at school but next year I plan on taking them on a tour of the displays. Since I only had one day free, my friend and I focused on seeing the Chain Reaction pieces. We managed to see a few, in between stops to shop…

  • Distant. Always.

A poem I wrote.   Distant. Always.   I had my guard up. I raised my fists high. I raged.   I was all alone; There was no one to fight But I fought til I was drained   I am all alone still, Fists clenched at my sides, No fight left in me.     My tears could fill oceans Because nobody sees Past my thrown out bored small talk   We touch base in computer keys, No voice to set the tone. Distant always.
