• The Meow Foundation Adopt-a-thon: Interviewing Some Very Special Cats.

On Saturday, September 17th, I was thrilled to be invited to the Meow Foundation’s new location to interview cats at their Adopt-a-thon. I am a huge cat lover and one of my favourite felines, Thorin, is a rescue from their foundation.     Meow Foundation is no-kill cat rescue center in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. An acronym for “Make Each One Wanted”, it was founded in 2000 by 11 people who wanted to save stray or abandoned cats. It is a cage-less environment that allows the cats and kittens to play, stretch out, relax, and really be themselves. I chatted with…

  • Exploring Gut Health

I will never take my health for granted again. I used to eat whatever I wanted, at any time of day, without a second thought. Now, I have a severe gluten-intolerance and I will never take my health for granted again. A couple of years ago, on my husband’s birthday, we went out for Vietnamese. I used the bathroom as soon as we got there. It was okay clean, but not great, and the pipe under the sink was held together with duct tape. All of a sudden, I thought of Anthony Bourdain’s comment in one of his books. He…

  • The Damaging Sentence I Will Stop Saying to My Kids

Welcome Autumn, I missed you.   Is anyone else surprised that the leaves are changing “already”. I am. This is the time of year that change in nature is physically evident and I get antsy about changing things in my own life. One of those things I want to change is the way I word things, especially when it comes to parenting. A potentially damaging sentence I say a LOT is, “What’s your problem??” Every time I say it, I cringe. But, seriously, it is the first thing that runs through my mind in a lot of situations. Hunter is…

  • Inspired to be….

Today I had coffee with a good friend. We were talking about how I have started to wake up every morning to work out and she had this to say, “You inspire me to…. feel inspired.” I laughed and took that as one of the greatest compliments ever. It’s great to have such intelligent and witty friends. I am blessed. Which of your friends inspires you or makes you laugh? • Breaking Through Workout Boredom

I used to be under the impression that when you found a workout you liked, that got results, you stuck with it. Maybe, once you felt up to it, you added in some other activities on the side; spin class, hiking, rock climbing or soccer. Your daily grind would remain to keep you up for those other activities. Some people successfully do this. Turns out, my personality doesn’t work like that, and I get BORED- with a capital BORED- after a very short time. I think that this feeling of boredom is fairly common. So….how am I supposed to get…

  • Why We Have Chosen to Live on Tight Budget.

It’s September already! The blur of summer has already passed, which may be a relief if you live in Calgary, AB, like I do, where summer was just a string of thunderstorms. The leaves are starting to change colours which always makes me want to begin change in my own life. The transformation of the natural landscape spurs me to transform too….and not just physically. I find myself reflecting on all of the ways my life could be different and I start to prioritize. This year my kids are both in full-time school. My daughter began Grade 3 and my…

  • Restless

I am restless. My mind is restless. It’s fidgety and can’t settle. There are ideas itching at the locked box in the back of my brain. My brain is whispering at me to take a leap; to gain the confidence to leap.   But to what?     Whenever I feel this restless feeling, I know that big things are coming. A shift is about to happen to someone, possibly me, that I care about. Sometimes it’s a change outside of my control and this is my body’s warning system to be ready, so stand guard, be ready…

  • Izzy Heals A Head Wound Which Motivates me to Workout Again

I kicked it back in gear this week and started getting up for my morning workout routine, after I stopped. It felt like starting over again! It is the first week I have given it my all since we went on vacation in March. It was tiring and hard to get up but in the end I was happy that I tried to get back on track…mostly successfully. Friday is usually my strongest workout once the week has created momentum. But this morning I had other duties. Yesterday Izzy hit her head on a metal playground platform when she tried…

  • Being Sick and Parenting

Last week I had to pretend I had super powers. Being very sick and feeling like a zombie, I lurched myself through the week in a daze. Twice I nearly fell asleep in my lunch, and Hunter had to ask me what I was doing, and if I was looking at my lunch “real close”. LOL. But I survived it and managed to be an okay mom to my kids at the same time! I also managed to drop off the fairy garden I had made for a friend in her yard (more about that next week), and I managed…

  • How to Accidentally Grow Potatoes and a Recipe for Honeyed Cabbage

A large part of being healthy is eating healthy, as I have slowly learned over the years. So, this year, I decided I would try and grow some of my own vegetables. I live in a four-floor townhouse in the city. I don’t have a yard, but I do have 2 balconies and a small cement pad.  I decided to use that to my full advantage and start some potted veggies on those. I have planted carrots, tomatoes and herbs, with the hope to add beans very soon. I have a few pots on each balcony, but the one that…
